In Ancient Greece, an enormus part of their culture was the Olympics. The Olympics are a sporting event where athletes compete for glory. Their were many different sports that people competed in. These sports and also the Olympics have been reestablished in the present time as the biggest sporting event that is held every two in four years alternating with the summer and winter Olympics.
The sports
There were many different sports that have been in the olympics most of them have stayed in the newer olympics. The sports that were played for the olympics were jumping, discus throwing, wrestling, boxing and pankration. All sports are played today and are a big the new olympics. The sports are all still in the present olympics except wrestling which was taken out just recently. The sports are all very interestingly designed. In jumping, the athletes would use stone or lead weights called halters to increase the distance they jumped. They would hold on to the weight to the very end of their jump and then chuck them backwards. In discus throwing, the discus has changed originally being stone and then later iron, or bronze. The technique was very similar to today's discus throwing. Wrestling was superbly valued for military excises without weapons. The match would go on until one of the athletes would plea for mercy. Although this sport was taken out of the olympics today, it is still a huge sport out of the olympics. In boxing, the boxers would strap tape around their hands which strengthened their wrists and steadied their hands. The straps were quite soft but gradually grew tougher. Pankartion was a very poplar sport this was a primitive form of martial art combing in wrestling and boxing, and was considered to be one of the toughest sports. Greeks believed that Theseus founded it when he defeated the fierce Minotaur in the labyrinth. Equestrain was had was a sport with horse races and chariot races and took place int the Hippodrome, a wide, flat, open space.
